Hawaii in December

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

We just got back from Hawaii, and we loved every moment of it! We wanted to have a nice Beach Christmas, but it rained every – single – day. It wasn’t like normal Hawaii rain. It was stormy, the worst weather of the year rain…. Lucky us! So I thought this blog post would talk about all the things I packed, what I wish I packed more of, and what I wish I didn’t pack. Next post I’ll talk about all the things we did and recommend doing while you're there! So, stay tuned.

I checked the weather two days before we left because I wanted to make sure I had clothes fit for all of our activities. The weather app said rain, storm, high winds – lovely! All of the activities I wanted to do were outside, of course, so I had to rethink everything! Living in sunny California I thought the Hawaii storm would be similar to here, wet and COLD. But it was absolutely not as cold as I thought it would, rather it was very humid with a breeze.

Things I wish I brought:

Rain Jacket -The number one thing I wish I brought was a rain jacket. I brought a windbreaker that I thought was waterproof, but it was not so it was soaked every day even when I was using an umbrella.

Rain boots/ Waterproof Shoes- I only brought a pair of sneakers - that I wore to the airport, hiking shoes, strapped sandals, and my Birkenstocks. I mostly used my Skechers strapped sandals, but I did wish I had a pair of waterproof shoes to keep my feet from getting wet. Socks- I wore my sneakers a few nights to keep my feet from getting wet. I expected to wear sandals most of the time, even with the rain, so I didn’t pack as many socks. I did indeed wear my sneakers more than I thought, so I did end up buying more socks because we did not feel like doing laundry on vacation. Umbrella- I did bring an umbrella, but it only fit me not my husband, so we did end up getting another umbrella at the ABC Store. I would recommend bringing a larger umbrella or two if you are traveling with more people.

Things I didn’t need to bring:

Long Sleeves- So I thought the storm was going to be cold air, but as I mentioned it was not. It was humid and still too warm to wear long sleeves.

Light Hoodie- I did not once use this. Luckily I carried it on with me so it did not take too much space in my luggage.

Leggings- It was way too hot and wet to wear leggings. But I did wear loose-fit flowy pants that came in handy at night when it did get a little chilly.

Levis- I did travel in my jeans but I did not once use them while in Hawaii. I believe there was only one night while I was there where it felt like I could have worn jeans, but I still did not wear them.

What I wore:

I wore my favorite biker shorts that I had purchased from white fox almost every day! I wanted to feel comfy more than cute but still cute, so I wore my biker shorts with oversized shirts.

The most Hawaii-looking shirt I had was a large button-up I found at Goodwill with a cute sequenced pineapple and flower on it. I got a ton of compliments surprisingly. I totally recommend looking for things in all places, even thrift stores.

Another thing I wore was this green set I bought on Amazon for when we went hiking. It was perfect because it did begin to sprinkle while we were hiking and it dried pretty fast, super impressed. I also purchased a blue one from Walmart.com for hiking. This one was a little thicker, but I loved the details it has in the back. Luckily it did not rain while we were hiking this day. Both of these outfits I did wear the whole day after hiking and they were very comfy.

The thing I wore the most was this very light black button-up crochet cardigan that I did wear most of the time when I got a little cold. I wore it as a top and I also wore it as a light sweater. It was convenient to carry around because it was light and easy to fold into a bag.

I'm a huge fan of jean shorts so I did wear my Zara shorts with different tank tops throughout our trip. They did start to become creased because of the way they dried from the rain. If you're not a fan of that I would recommend packing something else or bringing another pair.

Although it did rain every day we still went out and did everything we could do since we were in freaking Hawaii! The weather did fluctuate throughout the day from being super sunny to then having heavy rainfall in seconds. We made do with what we packed, but there is no need to worry about forgetting to pack something because there are plenty of places to purchase things you've forgotten or are in need of. Hopefully, this helps with your trip to Hawaii when there are crazy storms. No matter what weather you have, Hawaii is a beautiful island to visit and I would definitely recommend packing lightly with just a few rainy options.

Live your best life! XOXO
